The area's value for birds, which was only few years ago very small, is now great and of international importance, with more than 15-20.000 ducks and 5.000 coots wintering (up to 50.000 waterfowl in november) and of 311 bird species until now recorded, with a number of first observations for Italy.

Some of the most relevant species normally visible in the area, of course in appropriate seasons, are as follows: Shag, Little Bittern, Cattle Egret, Little Egret, Great White Heron, Purple Heron, Spoonbill, Mute Swan, Whitefronted Goose, Greylag Goose, Wigeon, Common Teal, Mallard, Pochard, Common Eider, Common Scoter, Coot, Oystercatcher, Black- Winged Stilt, Ruff, Curlew, Spotted Redshank, Little Tern.

Before the organization of a birwatching trip it should be considered that a few of the above listed species (and others) can be found only in open sea or distant areas, according with seasons and weather conditions. For those who are interested to visit such special places boat trips can be organized if booked well in advance.
